BATU NABAU AT ENGKILILI

Engkilili, Sarawak..

The existence of a boulder shaped like a huge snake is nothing new to the residents of Nyalau Muang longhouse. The boulder known as Batu Nabau is located in Bukong which is about 50 metres from the longhouse.

The Batu Nabau measures more than nine metres in length and two metres in diameter. It straddles Sungai Bukong at a place called Batu Lintang. The tale regarding Batu Nabau resurfaces after a Siamese man from Kuala Lumpur made a claim on the existence of a huge snake that turned into stone as he doubled his efforts to locate it. With the assistance of the local residents in the Sri Aman District, he located Batu Nabau as dreamt. Together with the local residents, he painted the boulder and cleared the areas around it.The man’s tale was published in the local newspaper.The tale did not end there as Jawi-like alphabets were said to have been found in the central portion of Batu Nabau. The alleged Jawi alphabets of alif, lam, nun, mim and sinwere said to have been arranged in a reverse order and separated from one another.

The discovery was made by one of the local residents who had visited the area after reading an article about Batu Nabau in the local newspaper. As Batu Nabau has become a public attraction, the Lubok Antu District Council (MDLA) plans to develop the area as one of the tourist destinations. It also proposes to conduct a detailed study on the existence of Batu Nabau which will be documented for public information.

Sri Aman - a small town and also the 2nd administrative division of Sarawak.Following the overwhelmed response from the public, recently a special platform to view the natural phenomenon had been built on the river bank of Batang Lupar which is called "Taman Panorama Benak". This is one of the very rare infrastructure development you can see in Sri Aman town in the recent decade. Anyway, this artistic looking park is a nice add-on in beautifying the town and it has further strengthen Sri Aman's position as "The town of Benak" in Sarawak. 

Taman Panorama Benak is located opposite Sri Aman Resident Office or beside/under Alice Fort near the town center. Its strategic location at a higher ground has make it an ideal platform to view the Benak phenomenon with more lengthy distance.If you happen to visit the "peaceful town" of Sri Aman, don't forget to stop by at this Taman Panorama Benak and if you are at the correct timing, you may witness what the Benak is all about!

Ulu People

           

Orang Ulu is an ethnic group in Sarawak. The various Orang Ulu ethnics together make up roughly 6% of Sarawak's population. The phrase Orang Ulu means upriver people and is a term used to collectively describe the numerous tribes that live upriver in Sarawak's vast interior. Such groups include the major Kenyah and Kayan people, and the smaller neighbouring groups of the Kajang, Kejaman, Punan, Ukit, and Penan. Nowadays, the definition also includes the down-river tribes of the Lun Bawang, Lun Dayeh, "mean upriver" or "far upstream", Berawan, Saban as well as the plateau-dwelling Kelabits. Orang Ulu is a term coined officially by the government to identify several ethnics and sub-ethnics who live mostly at the upriver and uphill areas of Sarawak. Most of them live in the district of Baram, Miri, Belaga, Limbang, and Lawas.

A vast majority of the Orang Ulu tribe are Christians but traditional religions are still practised in some areas.
